Landslides in Kenya’s Rift Valley Kill 21, Dozens Missing

Heavy rain in Kenya’s Rift Valley caused a huge landslide in the Chesongoch area of Elgeyo Marakwet County. The disaster happened after days of nonstop rainfall that loosened the soil on the steep hills. So far, officials have confirmed that 21 people have died, and about 30 others are still missing. The landslide destroyed more than 1,000 homes, blocking roads and cutting off several villages. Rescue teams and volunteers have been working hard to find survivors, but heavy rain is slowing down their efforts. Many people have been moved to safer areas as the search continues.

Survivors said they heard a loud noise before the hillside collapsed, giving them only a few moments to escape. Some families lost everything, including their homes and livestock. Around 30 injured people have been airlifted to hospitals in the nearby city of Eldoret for treatment. Government officials have promised to help rebuild homes and relocate families living in risky areas. The Interior Minister said rescue operations will continue and that the government is working on plans to prevent future disasters.
