Indian passport falls in ranking

Indian Passport Slips to 85th in Global Rankings

India’s passport has witnessed a noticeable decline in its global ranking, slipping to 85th place in the Henley Passport Index 2025, down from 80th position in 2024. According to the report by Henley & Partners, Indian passport holders now enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 57 destinations, compared to 62 the previous year. Despite India’s rising global economic and diplomatic stature, this fall highlights ongoing challenges in enhancing travel mobility for its citizens. Experts attribute the decline to multiple factors. One major reason is the lack of new bilateral visa agreements in recent years. While other nations have been actively negotiating reciprocal travel pacts to expand their citizens’ global reach, India’s pace in this area has remained relatively slow. Moreover, stricter global security protocols, increased immigration restrictions, and post-pandemic travel regulations have made it harder for Indian passport holders to enjoy easier entry to several countries.

Another contributing factor is the limited mutual recognition of electronic and biometric travel systems between India and other nations. While developed countries are moving toward simplified digital border systems, India’s participation in such frameworks remains minimal. This, combined with bureaucratic processes for outbound travelers, has kept India behind nations like Singapore, Japan, Germany, and South Korea — whose passports allow visa-free access to more than 190 destinations. Interestingly, India’s passport ranking had shown some improvement earlier in mid-2025, temporarily rising to 77th place with access to 59 countries. However, the latest update reflects stagnation in mobility gains. Analysts suggest that the government must focus on strengthening international diplomacy, negotiating more visa waivers, and modernizing travel documentation systems to reverse this trend.

The decline also has broader implications for business travelers, students, and professionals who depend on smoother global movement. As India continues to grow as an economic powerhouse, enhancing the global accessibility of its passport will be essential in aligning its mobility privileges with its global influence.
