Tragic Fuel Tanker Explosion in Niger State, Nigeria – 35 Dead
A tragic accident occurred on October 21, 2025, in Niger State, northern Nigeria, when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded along the Agaie–Bida highway. Local authorities reported that at least 35 people were killed and around 46 others injured in the incident. The tanker, which was transporting gasoline from Lagos to a northern city, skidded off the road and spilled fuel, creating a highly flammable situation.
Many local residents reportedly rushed to collect the spilled fuel, which then ignited, causing a massive explosion. Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, but the scale of the blast made rescue efforts challenging. Hospitals in the area received numerous burn victims and began providing immediate treatment to those injured.
The incident highlights the ongoing dangers associated with fuel transportation and fuel scavenging in Nigeria, a problem intensified by rising fuel costs and limited accessibility. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the accident and have urged stricter adherence to road safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
