A former CIA officer has claimed that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind the September 11, 2001 attacks, once escaped capture by disguising himself as a woman. According to the officer, the incident occurred during the early years of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan, when American and allied forces were closing in on Al-Qaeda strongholds in the rugged mountain regions near Tora Bora. Bin Laden reportedly used a burqa, a traditional full-body garment worn by women, to conceal his identity and evade U.S. surveillance and local informants.

The ex-CIA operative explained that during that time, U.S. intelligence believed bin Laden was trapped in the area but could not locate him precisely due to the difficult terrain and limited on-ground support. He allegedly took advantage of cultural sensitivities that prevented male soldiers from inspecting women wearing burqas. This disguise, according to the officer, allowed him to pass through checkpoints unnoticed and continue his escape deeper into Pakistan, where he is believed to have hidden for nearly a decade before being killed by U.S. Navy SEALs in Abbottabad in 2011.

The claim sheds new light on the complex challenges faced by intelligence agencies during the hunt for bin Laden, including navigating local customs, limited intelligence networks, and the use of deception by militants.
