India to Launch Its Own Space Station by 2035: ISRO Unveils Bold Space Vision
Varanasi, October 2025 : In a landmark announcement, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has revealed its ambitious plan to launch the nation’s first indigenous space station by 2035. The project aims to establish a permanent human presence in space, positioning India among the world’s elite space powers alongside the United States, Russia, and China. Speaking at the 14th Convocation of IIT-BHU, ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan shared that the organization plans to begin deploying the initial modules by 2027, with full operational capability targeted for 2035. This marks the next major milestone in India’s journey toward becoming a self-reliant space-faring nation. Narayanan emphasized that the initiative will leverage the success of missions such as Chandrayaan-3, Aditya-L1, and the upcoming Gaganyaan human spaceflight program. He stated that these missions have laid the technological foundation required for long-duration human missions and orbital infrastructure development. The proposed Indian space station will be officially known as the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS).
It will serve as a microgravity research platform, enabling Indian and international scientists to conduct advanced experiments in materals science, biotechnology, astrophysics, and space medicine. The BAS will also act as a staging point for future interplanetary exploration missions. According to ISRO sources, the station will initially accommodate two to four astronauts and remain in low Earth orbit (LEO) at an altitude of around 400 km. The modular structure will be designed for expansion, allowing additional sections to be added as India’s capabilities and collaborations grow.
