India to Host Centenary 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad
India is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the city of Ahmedabad officially recommended by the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board to host the centenary edition, marking 100 years since the Games’ inaugural event in 1930. The recommendation, announced on October 15, 2025, will be ratified by the full membership at the General Assembly in Glasgow on November 26, 2025. Ahmedabad was chosen over rival bids such as Abuja, Nigeria, due to its strong infrastructure, including the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium, and plans for the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, which will feature multiple stadia, aquatic centers, and training facilities. Hosting the Games for the second time in India, after New Delhi in 2010, is seen as a milestone for India’s sporting ambitions and aligns with the country’s long-term goal of hosting the Olympics in 2036. The event is expected to boost sports infrastructure, tourism, and employment in Gujarat while providing a platform to promote grassroots sports, though formal approval and careful planning will be crucial to ensure a successful and sustainable Games.
